Montreux Golf Club, home of the PGA Tour’s Reno-Tahoe Open; Washoe County Golf Course, the state’s
oldest course built in 1934; Red Hawk, a Robert
Trent Jones Jr. design brimming with natural lakes
and cottonwood trees; and Wildcreek, a layout with
stunning views of the High Sierras and Reno that’s
owned and operated by the Reno-Sparks Convention
and Visitors Association.
“Our sales team works closely with a wide
variety of groups that host tournaments and
other golf events at our Wildcreek golf
course,” says Ben McDonald, the association’s
communications director.
For an over-the-top exciting way to experience
the area, McDonald suggests snow skiing
in the morning followed by a round of golf in
the afternoon.
“The amazing terrain and climate allow for lots of
different recreation and fantastic views on the golf
courses,” says McDonald.
Popular group hotel options in the area are
the 422-room Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort,
Spa and Casino, which has 50,000 square feet of
meeting space and easy access (five minutes) to
two 18-hole championship
courses; the 400-room
Embassy Suites Lake Tahoe
Hotel & Suites Resort, which
has play privileges with
several top courses in the
region; the 2,000-room
Grand Sierra Resort,
where guest services can
arrange tee times at more
than 40 area courses,
including Montreux, Red
Hawk, and Arrow Creek
and the 1,700-room
Silver Legacy Resort &
Casino Reno, which can
arrange tee times.
Back to the Las Vegas environs where there are
several enticing options for those who don’t mind
traveling a few miles away from the Strip.
In the town of Henderson, about a 25-minute
drive from the Strip, golf is a way of life, not
just a recreation amenity. The area is dotted
with impressive courses that maximize the
natural beauty of the Southern Nevada Mountains
and host group outings. Among the more popular are
Black Mountain Golf and Country Club, Tuscany Golf
Club, Rio Secco Golf Club, Legacy Golf Club, and
Revere at Anthem.
Situated 25 miles from the middle of the Strip
and 20 minutes from downtown Vegas is the Paiute
Golf Resort, a complex with 54 holes of Pete Dye-designed golf, with his ever-present design features
like railroad-tie bunkers, exotic mounding, and
undulating greens.
For Tom Fazio-design fans, the Primm Valley
Golf Club, approximately a 40-minute drive from
the Strip, offers two distinctly different 18-hole play
experiences—one course is woodsy with lakes and
the other is a rugged desert layout.
In Mesquite, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas,
golfers can select from eight courses set in
the Virgin Mountain foothills. Five golf courses
are on the menu in Laughlin, 75 miles south
of the Strip. ■
A Wynn Win
One of the city’s most dynamic courses, Wynn Golf Club, is located on the Strip directly
behind Wynn Las Vegas.
Created by casino/hotel mogul Steve Wynn and Tom Fazio, this amazing course with
its 37-foot-tall waterfall, streams, thousands of pines and shrubs, and dramatic elevation
changes is an awe-inspiring way to spend five hours away from the gaming tables.
Guests at Wynn and Encore resorts are permitted to make tee time reservations up to 90
days in advance compared to only 30 days in advance for non-hotel guests.
The amenity-laden golf experience at Wynn Golf Club includes complimentary clubs by
Callaway and shoes by FootJoy for attendees who couldn’t bring their own equipment, and a
professional caddie program.
